The European Commission has issued a call to Turkey, urging the cessation of all threatening actions that harm good neighborly relations.
In response to Cypriot MEP Dimitris Papadakis, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell emphasized the need for Turkey to normalize relations with the Republic of Cyprus and uphold the sovereign rights of all EU member states.
Papadakis had sought measures to safeguard Cyprus’ sovereign rights in response to provocative actions in the “buffer zone.” Borrell, in his written reply, asserted the EU’s unwavering commitment to resolving the Cyprus problem based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality.
The European Commission stressed its strategic interest in fostering stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, urging Turkey to adhere to international law, de-escalate tensions, and promote sustainable good neighborly relations. Borrell emphasized the EU’s dedication to the Cyprus solution in alignment with UN Security Council resolutions and EU foundational principles. The High Representative reiterated the EU’s commitment to defending its interests and those of its member states while calling on Turkey to cease actions detrimental to regional stability.
