European Council President Charles Michel criticized Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov’s characterization of Russia’s actions as “in a state of war” during a press conference following an EU-level summit. Michel labeled Peskov’s statement as “cynical,” emphasizing that Russia’s actions constitute a “full-scale invasion” and an “aggression” against Ukraine.
Responding to a question about the EU’s readiness for war in light of the Kremlin’s remarks, Michel streesed the importance of strengthening the EU’s defense preparedness. He emphasized that while he doesn’t intend to instill fear in European societies, it is crucial to acknowledge the reality of the situation and take necessary steps to enhance defense capabilities.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Russia’s actions, stating that Russia has been at war with Ukraine since 2022. She criticized the Kremlin for concealing facts and denying their involvement in the conflict, asserting that today’s statement further exposes their betrayal of the Russian people.
