In an atmosphere of emotion, according to the typikon of the Great Church of Christ, the enthronement of the new Metropolitan of Spain and Portugal, Bessarion, took place on Saturday, March 27, at the Cathedral of Saints Andrew and Dimitrios in Madrid.
On behalf of Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Metropolitan Maximos of Switzerland gave an address to the newly enthroned Metropolitan.
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Madrid, Cardinal Carlos Osoro, also gave an address at the ceremony. Representatives of religious, diplomatic and military authorities from Spain and Portugal also attended the enthronement ceremony.
On Sunday, March 28, the Second Sunday of Lent, Metropolitan Bessarion of Spain and Portugal performed his first Divine Liturgy at the Orthodox Cathedral of Madrid.
