Οn the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Centre for Ecumenical, Missiological and Environmental Studies “Metropolitan Panteleimon Papageorgiou” (CEMES) Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew issued a message.
Among others the Ecumenical Patriarch stated:
“Theology is an interpretation of the Gospel of Christ, in dialogue with the contemporary world and the signs of our times, an expression of the eternal truths of our faith in the language of each particular historical era. In this sense, theology cannot ignore the culture in which it is called upon to bear witness.
A defensive attitude of theology towards the world violates the tradition of our Fathers, who have always argued in relation to the challenges of their time, without hesitating that this dialogue would inevitably lead to the secularisation of theology.
You and your collaborators know how to make use of the tradition of the Church and produce a living and contemporary theology which not only rejects but makes effective use of the possibilities offered by modern civilization.”
In the context of the annual General Assembly of the “Centre Metropolitan Panteleimon Papageorgiou”, which yesterday celebrated 10 years of its presence and witness, the above legacy from the inspiring message of the Ecumenical Patriarch.
