More than 2,200,000 digital images highlighting the cultural richness of the holy monasteries of Mount Athos are now accessible online across the globe after the completion of the “Athonic Digital Ark” project.
It is the largest project of application and use of modern information and communication technologies implemented to date in Mount Athos. The results of the project, which began in 2017, were presented by the scientific staff of “Athonite Digital Ark” and by members of the academic community at a special event organized by the Society for Macedonian Studies.
The event presented the digital platform of the project www.mountathos.org (free access to all) through which the vast material of the Ark is digitally made available to the entire world community via the internet, offering the opportunity to browse the relics of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, in a way that fully respects the spiritual and monastic nature of Mount Athos.
The spokesman of the Holy Community Elder Ieronymos Hieromonk of Simonopetra described the completion of the project as a milestone for Orthodox Christian Culture as its thousands digital images are now accessible online to the general public, highlighting its cultural heritage and the offer of the Fathers to young people who want to approach the Orthodox Christian Tradition through modern technology.”
The work of the “Athonite Digital Ark” involved 12 dominant monasteries of Mount Athos (20 in total), the Archive of Protaton and the (communal) New Skete of St. Paul’s Monastery. These are the monasteries of Vatopedi, Pantokrator, Karakallou, Stavronikita, Agios Pavlos, Simonopetra, Dionysiou, Xiropotamos, Gregorios, Xenophontos, Docheiariou and Zografou.
