The new book entitled “Cooking at the OAC” has been released by the Foundation’s publishing house, courtesy of the Municipality of Platanias.
This book consists of the Preface, the Bishop’s Greeting, the Chapter “The Diet in the Bible”, the main part with some Cretan recipes and the official text of the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church on “The importance of fasting and of maintaining this tradition nowadays”.
Moreover, in the Preface, it is written the following: “The Orthodox Academy of Crete (OAC) attaches importance to their substantial approach and handling of various social matters through dialogue and banquets.”
Metropolitan Ampholochios of Kissamos and Selino highlights the tradition that exists at the OAC according which they all “philosophise about several matters” during banquets. “Our interlocutors appreciate the smell of nature and nice food, but above all, they see each other,” he says. “This is the reality of a society of people who like cooking and respect their human beings and the environment,” he adds.
In the Chapter “The Diet in the Bible”, there is an extensive description of the diet and the raw materials mentioned in the Bible, the link between fasting and solidarity and the paternalistic approach to the environment which is a lifetime experience.
The main part of the book is the one with the Cretan recipes which are either traditional recipes or original recipes created by the chef of the OAC, Ioannis Katsifarakis. Finally, the book refers to the value of a good diet and the importance of fasting which are among the important issues that were discussed at the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church.
The book is translated into English by an associate of the Foundation, Emmanuela Larentzaki.
