St. Ioannis of the Valaam Monastery was canonized on Saturday, June 1.
On the feast day, the Divine Liturgy was held in the katholikon of the Valaam Monastery. Archbishop Leo of Helsinki and All Finland, Metropolitan Arsenin of Kuopio and Karelia, Metropolitan Elia of Oulu, Metropolitan Innokentios of Burundi and Rwanda (Patriarchate of Alexandria), and H.E. Panteleimon (retired Metropolitan of Oulu) with the brothers of the Monastery concelabrated the Archieratic Divine Liturgy.
The representative of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church Fr. Mattias Palli participated in the Divine Liturgy.
After the Divine Liturgy, the icon of St. Icon was processed around the Monastery, where the Saint led an ascetic life, and became the spiritual father of many Orthodox believers. His epistles have been translated into English, Finnish and Greek. Today the letters of the Elder of Valaam Monastery are known all over the world.
At the end of the Divine Liturgy, Father Madis Palli congratulated the Church of Finland on behalf of Metropolitan Stephanos of Tallinn and All Estonia.
Metropolitan Stephanos offered as a gift the icon of the New Martyrs of Estonia to the Monastery.
The memory of St. Ioannis is celebrated on June 5.
