The Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa announced the passing of Bishop Chrysostomos of Mozambique.
Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria offered a Trisagion service for the rest of the soul of the late bishop in the Patriarchal Chapel of Agioi Thedoroi, as reported by neakriti.gr.
By order of the Patriarch of Alexandria, Metropolitan John of Zambia was appointed locum tenens of the diocese.
The late Bishop of Mozambique, Chrysostomos (born George Karangounis), was born in Tithorea, Fthiotida, in 1960.
He was a graduate of the Higher Ecclesiastical School of Athens and the Theological School of the University of Athens. He was ordained a deacon in 1983 and a presbyter in 1986.
He served as priest, head, preacher and catechist in the Metropolises of Fthiotida and of Peristeri. He was seconded to the Patriarchate of Alexandria in 2005 and was appointed head of the Church of St. George in Tripoli, Libya and protosyncellus of the Holy Metropolis of Tripoli.
In November 2008 he was appointed head of the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in Cairo and priest of the Patriarchal Monastery of St. George in Old Cairo. In 2013 he returned to Libya as protosyncellus of the Holy Metropolis of Tripoli.
On November 26, 2014, following a proposal by the Patriarch of Alexandria, he was elected as Auxiliary Bishop of Berenice by the Holy Synod, ordained by the Patriarch of Alexandria on December 6, 2014, at the Patriarchal Church of Saint Nicholas in Cairo.
On November 24, 2015, following a proposal by the Patriarch of Alexandria, he was elected as Bishop of Mozambique by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.
