The actions of Belarusian security forces have unleashed the storm of protest because the law enforcement officers locked protesters inside a Roman Catholic church in Minsk.
In particular, while the citizens were gathering in Independence Square to take part in a demonstration against the disputed President Alexander Lukashenko last night at 20:30, police officers pushed the citizens inside the Roman Catholic Church of Saints Simon and Helena. According to eye witness reports, they were detained in the church for 40 minutes.
Bishop Yuri Kasabutsky strongly protested against the actions of the police and warned the law enforcement leaders that such actions were unacceptable and illegal.
According to the Constitution of Belarus, the bishop states, freedom of religion is guaranteed so no one can prevent the faithful from entering or leaving the places of worship.
It is recalled that a few days ago Lukashenko had made threats against representatives of religious denominations participating in anti-government protests.
