On Sunday, November 1, after the Dismissal of the Divine Liturgy, a walking marathon, known as “Walkathon,” began from the courtyard of St. Nicholas Church, in the suburb of Marrickville, Sydney, in which money is raised for the Greek Welfare Center of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia.
At the beginning of the event, which was attended by children from the Lyceum of Greek Women of Sydney, dressed in traditional Greek costumes, the Archbishop addressed a short greeting. He encouraged the participants to continue this beautiful tradition, which lasts 44 years, and congratulated the Director of the Greek Welfare Center, Stelios Magdalopoulos, on his contribution. “When we are going to do something for love and common good,” he said in his message, “then we insist on maintaining our traditions and doing our best to support our brothers and sisters.”
As this year’s Walkathon took place under adverse conditions, on the one hand, due to the pandemic, and, on the other hand, due to the bad weather of the day, the Archbishop thanked and congratulated those who decided to take part in the action and hope that they would be able to meet again next year under more advantageous conditions. The parishes have announced that food will be collected this year to be distributed to those in need.
