Archbishop Makarios of Australia made a post on social media on the fatal shipwreck that happened opposite the coast of Messinia in Greece yesterday of which the victims were refugees.
The Archbishop said: “Feelings of devastation from the news of the fatal shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea, opposite the coast of Messinia.”
“An unspeakable tragedy with hundreds of victims of our persecuted fellow human beings. Their cries too were taken down to the depths of the sea. They could not be heard by the modern “slave traders” who exploit human need. Neither by the powerful authorities of the earth, who must act decisively to end the ongoing drama. It is our duty to articulate our own cry of anguish, in defence of the face of our neighbour as an image of God,” he added.
Finally, he wished: “May our Almighty God strengthen the rescuers still searching for survivors and rest the souls of the victims.”
