With a visit to the New Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the abandoned Medieval settlement of Anavatos, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America completed his visit to Chios on Wednesday night.
At noon he had a meeting in Pantoukios with expatriates from Chios, where he was welcomed by the president of the Union of Expatriates of Chios Pantelis Bournias. During his speech, he urged the expatriates to invest in infrastructure, “Chios – he stressed – needs infrastructure as these bring great growth. But we also provide cultural growth, the Chians give scholarships to young people for studies and the protection of the environment”, while he also referred to the importance of land reclamation.
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America together with Metropolitan Markos of Chios performed a hierarchical service on Wednesday morning, at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Sts Victors.
The Metropolitan of Chios presented to the Archbishop of America the anniversary edition for the 100 years since the liberation of Chios as well as the work of the historian Konstantinos Kanellakis, while the Archbishop of America presented to the Metropolitan of Chios a hierarchical Egolpion.
This was followed by a tour of the Library of the Holy Metropolis of Chios “Agios Agapitos” in Vrontados and a visit to Daskalopetra, the “stone of Homer”.
Last night at the dinner given in his honor by the Mayor of Chios, Stamatis Karmantzis, he stated that the Archdiocese and the expatriates will be on the side of the people of Chios and the local government.
