On Monday, May 17, 2021, the funeral service of the Great Benefactor of the Parish of Basel and of the Metropolis of Switzerland, the late physician Soumela Terzani, took place in the Church of the God of Wisdom in Basel. The number of believers present was restricted due to the COVID-19 measures.
Metropolitan Maximos of Switzerland presided over the funeral service, who also represented Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
The Metropolitan was accompanied by the Grand Protopresbyter, George Tsetsis, First Vice President of the Metropolitan Council, the Protosyncellus of the Metropolis, Archimandrite Fanourios Tholiotis, Head of the Parish of St. Gallen, Archimandrite Damaskinos Kassotis, the Head of the Parish of Zurich, Protopresbyter Emmanuel Simandirakis, the of the Parish of Basel, Protopresbyter Dimitrios Matzelos, and Deacon Matthew Ladas.
The eulogy was delivered by the Metropolitan of Switzerland.
The Metropolitan extended his condolences to her relatives in Thessaloniki, commended the work of the renowned psychiatrist and referred to her biggest dream and deed, that is, the construction of a church for the Orthodox in Basel and the neighboring areas.
This work was carried out with her contribution and the assistance of Achilles and Elizabeth Kominos.
Fr. Emmanuel Simandirakis made a special reference to the charitable action of the late benefactor and to her diverse work from the very beginning of the Parish in Basel.
The burial of the late benefactor will take place in her homeland in Thessaloniki.
After the passing of the great benefactor, the Metropolitan of Switzerland decided that the memorial service for the founders of the Church of the Holy Wisdom in Bseil, Achilles, Elisabeth and Soumela, would take place on a specific Sunday and that there would be publication regarding the history of the Church of the Holy Wisdom based upon the archive and the testimony of the late benefactor.
