The main subject of the priests’ assembly of the Metropolis of Corfu was the State-Church relations. The assembly was held under the presidency of Metropolitan Nektarios of Corfu on Monday, September 16.
In their resolution, it is mentioned that the state is asked to respect the contribution of the Church to the nation.
The priests of the Metropolis of Corfu also point out that respect for the religious freedom of other religious communities does not entail degradation of the Greek Orthodox identity, adding that the presence of religious symbols in public place and the content of the religious education should not be questioned.
They further said that the Church has provided so much and continues to carry out great charity work.
Referring to the issue of immigration, it is noted that the issue is political “but that does not mean that the state should restrict the rights of citizens and faithful for the benefit of immigrants.”
The priests of the Metropolis of Corfu welcome the stance of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece regarding the church property management and the payment status of the clergy, stressing that there is no need for experiments once the existing status guarantees the distinct roles of Church and state.
They emphasize the need to nurture the new generation with morality while speaking of a “genocide of abortion,” calling for the Church’s initiatives to continue.
Finally, they point out that “Our Church will always engage in dialogue. That does not mean that we reject the truth.”
