The traditional White House celebration for March 25, with which the United States honors the Greek community, took place virtually for the first time.
This time the US President, Joe Biden, could not receive the guests for this important day because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
However, via a digital platform, the new US president and Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, had the opportunity to discuss and exchange views on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution in 2021.
The event was coordinated by the representative of the White House, Jen Psaki, who is of Greek origin.
Speaking to Diaspora Greeks, Joe Biden also referred to the telephone conversation he had with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
He did not hide his desire to build an even stronger relationship to promote the common interests between the United States and Greece.
“Under my administration, we will be as close as possible. I promise you this,” he stressed.
Apart from the Archbishop of America, the online meeting was attended by US Representatives, such as Dina Titus, John Sarbanes and Gus Bilirakis, and other prominent figures of the Greek-American community.
It was a pleasure joining His Eminence Archbishop @Elpidophoros and @POTUS to commemorate the bicentennial of Greek Independence. Νίκη ή θάνατος! pic.twitter.com/Fvf2Fq3xib
