During his last interview with CNN Turk, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu expressed… his “regret” that Kastellorizo belongs to Greece, stating that the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, visited “her island,” that is, part of the Greek territory.
“Greek President Sakellaropoulou visited her island, okay? Unfortunately, we are talking about her island. Because we gave this island in the past. We gave Kastellorizo to the Italians and the Italians gave it to Greece. So we gave these nearby islands. “In the past [Turkish teachers] tried to tell us in elementary and high school that it was a great success, but unfortunately we see it,” said the Turkish Foreign Minister, as reported by protothema.gr, pointing an accusing finger at Mustafa Kemal and all what he accepted by signing of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.
Under the Treaty of Lausanne, the Dodecanese, including Kastellorizo, were assigned to Italy and then to Greece in 1947 after World War II.
