The dialogue between Church and State on clergy’s property and payment has begun

The dialogue between Church and Government of Greece

The conference of the Special Committee on Dialogue of the Church of Greece, chaired by the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos, Hierotheos, took place in the presence of the Minister of Education, Kostas Gavroglu.

The Minister and the Secretary-General of the Greek government presented the government bill on the pay of the clergy, which is currently being drafted.

As pointed out in the announcement published after the meeting, the Committee insists on the existing scheme of payment of the clergy and church employees, on the Hierarchy’s decision on November 16, 2018.

At the conclusion of the conference, the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos said that “we had the pleasure to listen to the whole rationale of the bill, currently being drafted, which will be shortly sent to the Committee. We will then study it thoroughly and give both a written and an oral reply. There will also be a further discussion according to the decision of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece, on November 16, 2018.

The Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, Kostas Gavroglu, for his part, stated that during the conference they analyzed to the Committee the structure and principles of the bill being drafted. He also referred to an enlightening discussion that included the topics of payment, church property and permanent posts. He also underlined that in a few days the bill will be sent to the Committee, in the form pursuant to which the Government would like to continue the dialogue.
