Ștefan Dascălu, immunology and theoretical epidemiology researcher at the University of Oxford, was awarded the Romanian Patriarchate’s Order of the Holy Brâncoveanu Martyrs during a ceremony on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
The distinction was handed to him by delegates of the Romanian Patriarchate, present in London for an interdisciplinary conference in Oxford. The academic event focused on the collaboration between state authorities and religious institutions during public health crises.
“It is a great honor, and I am very pleased to have been awarded this prestigious order by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, whom I thank from the depth of my heart. Through dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation for the common good, we can further improve people’s lives, in terms of both physical and spiritual health,” Ștefan Dascălu told Basilica.ro.
Fr Michael Tița, coordinating patriarchal counselor of the Department of Interchurch and Interreligious Relations and External Church Communities, handed the order to Ștefan Dascălu.
The ceremony took place at a prestigious London club attended by members of the academic communities of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge during an official dinner hosted by Laura Popescu, the Romanian Ambassador to London.
The event was attended by Fr Ciprian Ion Ioniţă, the coordinating patriarchal counselor of the Social-Philanthropic Department of the Patriarchal Administration, Vasile Bănescu, spokesman of the Romanian Patriarchate, and Roxana Dumitrache, Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.
