The Orthodox temples in Berat have sustained injury due to the abandonment after decades of atheism. The damaged hagiographies are under conservation and restoration programs by the Institute of Cultural Monuments in Albania.
In particular, the restoration work will take place in historic temples at the Berat Castle, in order to revive the Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes.
The stages of restoration of frescoes will include cleaning of the painted surface, integration of lost content, and paint consolidation.
Meanwhile, the restoration work of the frescoes “Last Supper” and “Washing of the Feet” was completed in the Church of Ss Constantine and Eleni in Berat.
It should be noted that the Orthodox Church of Albania has made serious efforts in order to renovate many temples and monasteries throughout the country. However, the Church has not yet been granted places of worship, which are currently under the administration of the Ministry of Culture of Albania.
