The recent decision of the Council of State that found the curriculum of the Religious Education lesson by former Minister of Education Kostas Gavroglu to be unconstitutional and Greece’s yesterday’s conviction by a European Court of Human Rights chamber, bring radical changes to the curriculum of the Religious education lesson and the exemption from it.
The intention of the Ministry of Education to launch specific amendments was announced by Minister of Education Niki Kerameus. “The Ministry will process and address in a coherent manner all issues raised by the recent decisions of the Courts. In this context, the arrangements concerning the curriculum of Religious education and the course of exemption from the lesson will also be amended to be fully compatible with national and EU law as well as with the European Convention on Human Rights,” the Minister stated.
According to the Ministry of Education – in compliance with no. 1749/2019 recent decision of the Council of State – the Ministry launches the modification of the current legislation for both the curricula and the method of exemption.
