Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a warning to the West, amid Russia’s celebration of Victory Day, accusing Western powers of risking a global conflict. Thus, Putin emphasized Moscow’s resolve not to tolerate threats against its sovereignty.
Putin condemned what he termed the “arrogant” Western elites for overlooking their country’s pivotal role in defeating Nazi Germany and for exacerbating conflicts worldwide.
Speaking from Red Square amidst an unusual May blizzard, Putin underscored Russia’s commitment to preventing global conflict while asserting its readiness to defend itself. He stressed the perpetual preparedness of Russia’s strategic forces.
Putin, who deployed Russian troops to Ukraine in 2022, views the conflict as part of a broader struggle with the West. He accuses Western powers of humiliating Russia by expanding into what he perceives as Moscow’s sphere of influence following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
While Ukraine and Western nations denounce Putin’s actions as imperialistic land grabs, Russia justifies its control over approximately 18% of Ukraine’s territory, including Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine, by citing historical ties to these regions.
In his address, Putin’s rhetoric underscores Russia’s firm stance in the face of perceived Western encroachment and its resolve to defend its interests, even at the risk of escalating tensions.
Russian officials are sounding the alarm that the conflict in Ukraine is entering a dangerous new phase, with President Putin issuing repeated warnings of the potential for a broader, more catastrophic war involving the world’s major nuclear powers.
Tensions have surged in recent weeks, with significant developments heightening the sense of crisis: US President Joe Biden authorized a substantial $61 billion aid package to Ukraine, while Britain affirmed Ukraine’s right to defend itself using British weaponry. Additionally, French President Emmanuel Macron declined to rule out the deployment of French troops to confront Russian forces.
In response, Russia declared its intention to conduct exercises aimed at refining tactical nuclear capabilities within military training institutions. Moscow characterized this move as a response to perceived threats from France, Britain, and the United States, further exacerbating the already precarious situation.
