The presidents of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, spoke today during a telephone conversation about Libya, Syria and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Kremlin said the two presidents’ focus was mainly on the crisis in Libya, where they support rival factions, and on the need to take real steps towards a lasting ceasefire.
The Turkish presidency announced that Putin and Erdogan also discussed the dispute between Turkey and Greece over the search for energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean, saying that “they emphasized the importance of continuing close co-operation and dialogue.”
The Kremlin added that the two presidents also agreed during that conversation to reinforce counter-terrorism efforts in Syria, following information released earlier today that a joint Turkish-Russian patrol had been hit by an explosion in the Idlib region. The Turkish presidency added that Putin and Erdogan agreed to continue the dialogue on Syria through diplomatic and military channels.
