President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos on Tuesday referred to the dramatic repercussions of the climate crisis on the Mediterranean’s cultural heritage and monuments, while speaking at the 20th High-level Meeting of the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre on “Climate Change: Its impact on the life and Cultural Heritage of the Mediterranean” held at the Acropolis Museum in Athens.
Pavlopoulos, who was presented with an award by the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre, underlined the ominous impact of atmospheric pollution in the present day and the increasing intensity of extreme weather phenomena that put ancient monuments at risk. He noted that the Mediterranean “is a very fragile ecosystem” while it is also “the cradle of many civilisations that affected and significantly affect humanity’s cultural history,” and is teeming with ancient monuments of great value, including exceptional submerged antiquities.
