“It is as if the whole world was crucified today. The sky is dark because of the pandemic, which roams the skies like a dragon,” Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria said to ANA-MPA after elevating the Holy Cross on Great Thursday evening at the Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Alexandria.
“Easter 2020 is like a crossroads, where humans will be judged. Our church has not been closed. The Church of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Alexandria, the monastery of St. Savas, the Church of St. Nicholas, and the monastery of St. George in Cairo, remained open. The church services were performed by a few Bishops and priests,” he added.
In his effort to give hope he stressed, “My brothers and sisters, Greeks, Cypriots, Egyptians, Greeks of Egypt, Africans, we may have shed tears on Great Friday, but a day of hope and optimism will soon begin. Despite the current pandemic, our Lord, the Crucified Christ will not allow our sorrow to take over. The Light of the Resurrection will soon come and, therefore, it will illuminate every human being in this world. I wish you longevity and blessed years!”
