Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria and All Africa commemorated those who passed away on Sunday of the Souls in the Holy Monastery of St. George of Old Cairo.
Patriarch Theodore was accompanied by the Abbot of the monastery, Archim. Damaskinos Alazrai.
The Primate of the Patriarchate of Alexandria called them all to pray that “God rest those who passed away and deem them worthy of the resurrection of our Lord which is the True Light.”
“This Saturday is special. It is dedicated to the people we loved. To the people we lived with, the parents who gave birth to us.
Our brothers who were with us, the teachers who taught us the lessons, the godfathers who baptized us. Today, however, thousands upon thousands have passed away. Many of them do not have someone to commemorate them today.
But the Church did not forget them. That is why this Saturday is dedicated to the Christians who passed away.
All who passed into a different world than ours. Where peace, love and blessing of God reign.
Christ is the God of love. And today all the souls of the people who left are under His roof.
We prepared this wheat that symbolizes the Resurrection of the dead. We commemorated his Patriarchs, the hierarchs, all the priests who passed away.
Before we begin the journey of Holy and Great Lent, we ask them to intercede for us. You, my children, who came today to commemorate your people is a very nice deed and you will have a blessing from all the dead.
But as we reminded them today, the Saturday of the Souls, their memory must be in our hearts every day. The great Fathers of our Church wrote books about how much the souls of the dead rest when we commemorate their name,” said Patriarch Theodore.
Afterwards, the Patriarch performed a Trisagion on the graves of the late Patriarchs.
