By Bishop Grigorios of Mesaoria
Our Church commemorates today Virgin-martyr Anysia of Thessaloniki.
Virgin-martyr Anysia was born devout and wealthy parents from Thessaloniki and lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. When she was orphaned at a young age, she dedicated herself to vows of chastity and poverty, praying and helping the poor.
As he was heading to the temple, a soldier arrested her and demanded that she sacrificed to idols.
Due to her persistent denial, he became furious and began to insult Christ. When she reacted, the soldier ran her through with his sword. Virgin-martyr Anysia received the eternal wreath of martyrdom.
There are many examples of female saints who, with their lives and struggles, show their strong devotion to the will of God.
