The Church commemorates Saint Pachomius the Great, Saint Achillios, Bishop of Larissa, Venerable Kali and Saint Demetrius of Moscow the Wonderworker, Slain Crown Prince.
Saint Pachomius the Great was born in Thebes (Upper Egypt) in AD 290 to pagan parents. When he became an adult, he was recruited, along with others, and he was held as a prisoner in order not to escape.
He got to know the love and charity of Christians and wanted to be baptized. Later, he became a monk, a student of the ascetic Palamon. He was convinced that the spiritual help of the monks could be better achieved through coenobitic monasticism.
After ten years, Pachomius built a monastery and applied his monastic rules. He founded the Lavra while nine other monastic communities were established around it.
Athanasius the Great was spiritually connected with Saint Pachomius. At Easter of 346 AD, many monks, including Saint Pachomius, reposed in the Lord due to a plague To this day, Orthodox monasticism is based on his legacy and teachings.
