“At this critical juncture, where geopolitical instability is rampant and revisionist forces have engaged in a highly aggressive foreign policy, the United States can play a key role in maintaining security and peace in the eastern Mediterranean,” said the Secretary General of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy (IAO), Maximos Charakopoulos, after having sent letters of congratulations to the elected Greek-American members of the US Congress.
The head of the IAO in his statement underlines that “in this context, we expect that the Greek-American Congress members will also contribute to Joe Biden’s administration, who has publicly taken a stand on the rights of the Orthodox in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean in support of our positions on stability through the peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of respect for international law. We are convinced that there can be many points of contact and cooperation between the IAO and the members of the Congress, especially in the field of respect for human rights, the elimination of religious intolerance and the defense of threatened Christians in the long-suffering Middle East.”
In his letters, after congratulating the deputies on their election, Maximos Charakopoulos underlines that the IAO is a political organization that has been active for 27 years and includes parliaments, groups of deputies and individuals from 25 countries with the presence of Orthodox, and points out that “we look forward to working with you and your contribution to the activities of IAO.”
The recipients of the letters of the IAO general secretary are the Congress members of Greek origin: John Sarbanes (Maryland), Gus Bilirakis (Florida), Charlie Crist (Florida), Dina Titus (Nevada), Chris Pappas (New Hampshire), Nicole Malliotakis (New York).
