Father Daniel Ene, secretary of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of the Americas, officiated the first baptism in the Romanian community of Cancun, Mexico.
The priest attended the meeting of the Romanian community in Cancun with His Excellency Marius Gabriel Lazurcă, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Mexico, on the occasion of the visit of a delegation from Romania to the Mexican Federation.
The delegation was led by Valentin Muntean, Director General of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania. The meeting was also attended by Claudiu Băjenaru, Deputy Director General in the Romanian Ministry of Domestic Affairs.
After the meeting, on May 12, Father Daniel officiated the Holy Baptism and administered the Sacrament of the Holy Communion to a young Romanian from the community.
In the evening of the same day, the secretary of the Metropolis of the Americas met with the Roman Catholic Bishop of Cancun and Chetumal, Msgr. Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, with whom he discussed the possibility of obtaining land use in Cancun’s Sanctuary of St. Mary, where Romanians want to build the first Orthodox Church in the area.
The following day, Father Daniel Ene celebrated the Divine Liturgy in Cancun’s Catholic Church of St. Mary. At the end of the service, a Romanian family offered to bear the cost of building the wooden church in case the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of the Americas and the Catholic Diocese of Cancun reached a deal for the land.
