The event “Crete and Pontus – Two aspects of Modern Greek Culture through their traditional songs” was successfully held on Sunday, October 15, organized by the Consulate General of Greece in Sydney, in collaboration with the association “Pontoxeniteas” of New South Wales and the Cretan Brotherhood of Sydney and New South Wales. The event was attended by a large number of Greek-Australians, while representatives of the Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, the Archdiocese of Australia, as well as other associations of the Greek community were present.
The keynote speaker was the Honorary Scientific Associate at the University of Sydney, Dr. Alfred Vincent, who analyzed the historical context that shaped the special tradition of these two societies, ephasazing on linguistic, cultural and musical aspects.
The speech was followed by traditional music. The songs highlighted the common elements of Crete and Pontus.
The Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Ioannis Mallikourtis, congratulated the main speaker, stressing the importance of preserving the Greek language within the Greek diaspora.
