“The marbles belong to the Parthenon”, clarified in a post on Twitter, the Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schoinas, in the aftermath of the statement made by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, ruling out the “repatriation” of the marbles and arguing, on the other hand, that their legal owner is the British Museum.
“In these difficult times we are going through, the world cultural heritage should elevate humanity and not divide it,” the Vice President of the Commission pointed out in his message.
It is recalled that the Greek Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, also responded to Boris Johnson, clarifying that for Greece the British Museum illegally possesses the marbles of the Parthenon and stating the readiness of the Ministry of Culture to present the necessary documents. It seems that “there was no legal acquisition” by Lord Elgin.
