The Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of the European People’s Party, Vangelis Meimarakis, and the ND delegation to the European Parliament, sent a letter to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and to Director-General of UNESCO Audrey Azoulay for the preservation of Hagia Sophia as a World Heritage Site.
The letter informs of the developments with the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, and calls on the two top officials to take “the necessary measures” to protect “this World Heritage Site,””the international agreements, the UNESCO framework and the European values and principles.”
This move has found strong cross-party support from MEPs of the political groups in the European Parliament.
The letter was sent to all MEPs for the collection of signatures, immediately “after the decision of the Turkish President to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque, which is unacceptable and offensive to European authorities and values. MEPs bring both Mr. Borrell and Mrs. Azoulay face-to-face with their responsibilities in preserving the physiognomy of this universal symbol, as a World Cultural Heritage Site” according to the announcement of ND.
