Minister of Education Niki Kerameus on Monday announced plans for a minimum-grade threshold for admission to higher education, a maximum time limit for completion of undergraduate studies, and the abolition of the “poorly understood” university asylum, speaking during a discussion of government’s policy statements in Parliament.
Kerameus called these upcoming changes direct interventions in the field of her responsibility, and said these will ‘return’ universities back to their students, teachers and administrators.
She also announced a reduction in teachers getting transfers to other public institutions, so that teachers can return to the classrooms, thus speeding up the recruitment process of 4,500 teachers in special education and training.
Kerameus presented the six main objectives of the government’s education framework, with the first objective being greater freedom and greater autonomy for schools and universities and making use of the specific skills of teachers, and the second being more extroversion in terms of effective connection with the labor market.
Other objectives include equal opportunities for all, exploiting the new benefits of the digital age, and delivering better citizens to society.
Finally, the Education Minister said that the sixth objective was to adopt what she called realistic educational policies backed up by evidence.
