The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was closed on Wednesday for a week for precautionary reasons because of the coronavirus epidemic, as it was known from many sources.
The closure was decided after Israel Police had a meeting with church representatives, said Wadi Abu Nassar, spokesman of the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land, after the Israeli government had announced additional, tighter measures to curb the disease spread.
A photojournalist from the French Agency said he saw the authorities close the church at 5 p.m.
The closure takes place as Christians prepare for Easter, a time when thousands of pilgrims and tourists usually flock to Jerusalem, whose streets are almost deserted at this time.
