Bishop Nektarios of Arsinoe received the most votes in the first round of the election of the new Metropolitan of Kition.
According to an announcement by the Church of Cyprus, Bishop Nektarios Spyrou of Arsinoe received 7,497 (70.24%) votes.
Archimandrite Evmenios Siippis received 3,122 (29.25%) votes while the others candidates received 54 (0.41%) votes.
The first three clergymen, who meet the criteria, according to the Charter of the Church of Cyprus, and will receive the most votes, whose name being in most of the sealed ballot papers, will proceed to the second round of elections.
The Holy Synod will be convened in order to validate the results of the elections, examine the challenges and compile the electoral list, on Tuesday, July 30, 2019.
Then the Holy Synod will vote and elect one of the three candidates as the new Metropolitan of Kition.
The clergyman who will receive the most votes from the members of the Holy Synod will be elected as Metropolitan.
