Athens University launches first English-language BA in classical studies

National Kapodistrian University of Athens

In a bold wager for the coming academic year starting this September, the National Kapodistrian University of Athens is launching the first Greek university undergraduate degree course taught entirely in English, offering non-EU students an opportunity to study for a “BA in the Archaeology, History and Literature of Ancient Greece” at its School of Philosophy in Athens.

The platform for online applications is now open and the deadline for submitting applications is March 31, 2020.

In statements during the presentation of the programme in October, Education Minister Niki Kerameos had noted that the specific BA programme was “proof that Greek universities can spread their wings abroad, overcoming inflexibilities,” and pointing out that Classical studies were an ideal subject for attracting foreign students.

The University of Athens has confirmed that students from all corners of the world have expressed interest in the offered degree programme launching in 2020-21 for the first time.

Τhe new “ BA Program in the Archaeology, History, and Literature of Ancient Greece combines the disciplines of archaeology, ancient history and ancient Greek literature in a unique synthesis. The program’s curriculum covers all aspects of Ancient Greek Studies, tailored for a global audience with an interest in Classical culture. It is based on a carefully designed combination of instruction in the classroom and instruction on-site, with frequent visits to archaeological sites and other locations of cultural interest.

The programme is addressed exclusively to prospective University students from countries outside the European Union. Non-EU University students are also invited to join this BA Program for one-academic-year-study and to be introduced into archaeology, history, ancient Greek literature and art, Aegean civilizations, etc.

Modern Greek language courses are available at the Modern Greek Language Teaching Centre. The BA programme is offered by a historical University and the School of Philosophy of the NKUA, with a tradition that exceeds 180 years of ongoing activity and strong presence in the area of Higher Education-both the University and the School are consistently highly ranked in international university rankings.

Lasting four-year (eight academic semesters), the programme focuses on Greek antiquity and awards a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts (BA).

Tuition fees are set at 6,000 euros annually and each student is requred to have 248 ECTS to successfully complete the program.

Admission requirements and information about the programme’s structure are listed in detail on the website https://baag.uoa.gr .

The programme’s e-brochure can be found on: https://synergasia.uoa.gr/modules/document/file.php/ADM102/Parousiasi_A4_School_of_Philosophy.pdf

The classes in archaeology, ancient history and ancient Greek literature will be combined with visits to archaeological sites and other locations of cultural interest, giving students the opportunity to do Classical Studies in the place where Greek civilisation was born. In addition to museums and archaeological sites, the programme includes visits to locations of interest in the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Macedonia, Crete, Santorini and Naxos. There will also be an opportunity to observe archaeological digs in Marathon, Attica.

According to NKUA, the programme aims, among others, to develop cultural and academic ties between Greece and countries outside the EU, while helping to promote the international character of Greek studies.
