In contrast to law, and right to religious freedom, (“Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Albania and the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania”), two temples in Albania, one at the Metropolis of Fier and one at the Metropolis of Gjirokastra (in village Lekli Tepelena), were desecrated for political purposes.
The temples were used as pre-election centers in view of the local elections in Albania on June 30, without asking for permission from church authorities.
The Press Office of the Archdiocese of Tirana noted that “using the temples for political purposes during pre-electoral period is an insult to the religious sentiment of the faithful.
Every church in Albania, as part of the Orthodox Community, is a sacred place of worship and cannot be used in any way for political purposes.
Therefore, we ask that these actions, aiming at insulting religious coexistence, should not be repeated.”
