Political controversy has broken out in Turkey over a speech by an imam in Hagia Sophia in the presence of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Specifically, the imam called Kemal an “unbeliever” and a “tyrant” because he had turned Hagia Sophia into a museum.
The imam claimed that the decision to convert Hagia Sophia into a museum was bad. This was a very serious accusation against the founder of the Turkish Republic.
The official opposition reacted strongly and called for a public inquiry while Erdogan’s silence provoked questions.
