The 80th anniversary of the Battle of Crete was celebrated on Saturday, May 22, at the Cenotaph of Hobart, in the presence of representatives of the Greek Diaspora and the Australian authorities.
Archbishop Makarios of Australia was represented by the Archiepiscopal Vicar of Canberra and Tasmania, Archimandrite Prochoros Anastasiadis, who performed the Trisagion, assisted by the Head of the Holy Trinity Church, Fr. Vassilios Verdos.
The Governor of Tasmania, Kate Warner, the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, Elise Archer, MPs from the island state of Australia, as well as the President of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, Antonis Tsourdalakis, were present.
After the Trisagion, wreaths were laid at the monument. Fr. Prochoros laid a wreath at the monument on behalf of the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and Archbishop Makarios.
Afterwards, a luncheon was hosted in the hall of the Greek Community.
