The Inner West City Council gave the green light for the renaming of an area in the heart of Sydney to “Little Greece” last Tuesday as reported by vema.com.au.
It is part of the Marrickville area between Livingstone Rd and Victoria Rd.
Following the vote, which ratified the renaming, Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne spoke of a symbolic move aimed at honoring and respecting the area’s migrant heritage and continuing to build its multicultural future.
In a post on Facebook, he acknowledged the timeless contribution of the Greek community to the development of Marrickville, saying an “efharisto” (“thank you”).
It is noted that the discussion on the renaming had been open since April 2020, after a suggestion by the municipal councilor Sam Iskandar, while the name “Little Athens” had been on the “table” of consultations.
Eventually, the name “Little Greece” won in recognition of the established presence of the Greek community in Marrickville, which was the heart of the Greek diaspora in Sydney.
The official renaming ceremony will take place on March 25, the day of the Greek national holiday and the 200th anniversary of the 1821 Greek Revolution.
Council has just voted to rename the Marrickville Rd Precinct as “Little Greece” ?? This is about respecting our migrant…
