The first prayer was held yesterday at the official Mosque of Athens in Votanikos. The mosque will receive nine people from today in the five prayers that will be performed as there is a limit on the number of people to avoid mass gathering due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As reported by protothema.gr, the Mosque of Athens opened yesterday, where prayers were held for the Muslims living in Attiki.
The 49-year-old Sunni interpreter, Mohamed Zaki, who came from Morocco about 25 years ago as an economic immigrant, is the first imam of Athens. He speaks Arabic and French fluently. Mohamed Zaki is a Greek citizen. He is married, and has a degree in Physics and Mathematics and has attended special courses in Muslim Theology.
It is noted that the mosque does not have a minaret.
The sermon will be allowed to be delivered only in Greek or by concession in English while the prayer will always be performed in Arabic.
