Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece presented today to the representatives of the media the Program of the Events for the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution (1821 – 2021).
He announced that, with the blessing of the Holy Community of Mount Athos, the Church of Greece will receive in Athens the miraculous Icon of The Theotokos “Axion Esti”.
Referring to the ideals of the Fighters of 1821, the Archbishop characteristically underlined the following: “Other peoples rebelled against their Church. We, Greeks, however, fought in the 21st century, together with our Orthodox Church, which nurtured us with the desire for liberation. The land we tread on is watered with blood from fustanellas and cassocks! Our Nation revolted “for the Holy Faith in Jesus Christ and the Freedom of our Homeland”, as the Samian revolutionary and scholar George Kleanthis wrote.”
Concluding his speech, the Archbishop linked the anniversary events with the present and the future of our country and, among other things, said: “Especially today it is necessary, apart from the discord that we have paid dearly in the past, in a spirit of national solidarity, to be ready to face all those who with provocative moves raise illegal claims against our homeland. Always striving for peaceful coexistence, but making it clear that 1821 is for us a school of memory and a source of power. We remember because we want to have a future. And we celebrate our glorious past, because that ensures a solid proposition for a meaningful life, national and personal.”
