The monk from the Monastery of Saint Paul on Mount Athos, who had been intubated at the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “George Papanikolaou” was finally extubated after his multi-day battle with the corona virus.
The 85-year-old was deemed necessary to undergo mechanical ventilation when his health condition had deteriorated rapidly due to the Covid-19 infection on September 20.
Yesterday morning, ten days later and after a clear improvement of his clinical presentation, the monk was extubated.
In fact, in the last test he underwent, the monk was found to be negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and so he will not even need to be treated at the Covid clinic. Instead, he will be transferred to the Pulmonary Clinic of the hospital and will remain there until he is discharged, of course under close medical supervision as he has an underlying disease and specifically hypertension.
Although extubated since Tuesday, the monk remained according to voria.gr until this morning in the Covid ICU until a bed is found.
It is recalled that the infectious disease specialist and representative of the Ministry of Health, Sotiris Tsiodras, had shown special interest in the condition of the 85-year-old, who regularly contacted the hospital asking to be informed about the progress of his health.
The Political Commander Athanasios Martinos of Mount Athos, of course, shows similar interest at every opportunity.
