The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who is visiting Sydney, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, visited the Saint Athanasios Cemetery in Rookwood, where he performed a memorial service (trisagion) for the repose of the souls of the late Archbishops of Australia, Theophylactos and Stylianos.
He was joined in prayer by the current Archbishop Makarios, clergy, and many gathered faithful. Addressing those present, the Patriarch spoke with paternal warmth, responding to the welcome speech given by the Protopresbyter John Grillas, the cemetery’s chaplain.
In his speech, the Ecumenical Patriarch spoke about the character, work, and contributions of Archbishop Stylianos to the Archdiocese of Australia, recalling their time as classmates in Halki. He also offered prayers for the repose of his soul.
