The voting process for the selection of the three hierarchs who will be presented before the Holy Synod for the appointment of the new Archbishop of Cyprus has been completed.
The polls closed at 18:00 and at 942 polling stations throughout Cyprus. Regarding the count, the results will be sent by email or fax to the Archdiocese, where the General Election Superintendent will accept them and will issue the final result.
According to Yannis Charilaou, curator of the archdiocesan elections, the results will be officially announced after the end of the count.
With 100% of the votes counted, the final results give:
to the Metropolitan of Limassol at a rate of 35.68%
to the Metropolitan of Paphos at a rate of 18.39%
to the Metropolitan of Tamassos at a rate of 18.10%
to the Metropolitan of Constantia at a rate of 14.79%
to the Metropolitan of Morphou at a rate of 9.80%
to the Metropolitan of Kyrenia at a rate of 3.24%
What does the procedure for the appointment of a new Archbishop foresee next
At the end of the electoral process, the next three days are days of objections. After the three days, the General Superintendent of the Archdiocesan Elections will collect any objections that exist and should hand them over to the Locum Tenens and the Holy Synod.
According to the Charter of the Church of Cyprus after three days, within five days the Holy Synod must meet to study the objections, validate the result and prepare the Triprosopon.
Subsequently, within three days, the Holy Synod will select the Archbishop from the Triprosopon.
