With more than 600,000, according to recent estimates, the Greeks of Australia are the seventh largest ethnic group in Australia, adding their culture, traditions, and language to the country’s web.
Melbourne, located in the state of Victoria, is today the most concentrated center of the Greek Diaspora, as it is the city that hosts the largest Greek population outside Greece. With around 400,000 Greek-Australians living in the city, although some conservative estimates put the community at over 170,000, Melbourne also hosts the most Greek-Australians in the country.
Greek immigration to Melbourne has a long history, dating back to the 1850s, when the region experienced a golden peak, inspiring a huge wave of immigrants from Greece. Since then, Greeks in Melbourne have maintained their connection to their culture and language.
