The United States continues to support the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation, a State Department spokesman said, commenting on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statements about dividing the island.
Responding to a question from ERT, the US State Department spokesman said that “the United States continues to support a comprehensive solution led by the Cypriots to reunite the island into a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation that will benefit all Cypriots as well as the wider area.” We welcome the efforts of the UN Secretary-General to facilitate the resumption of political talks.”
It is recalled that Tayyip Erdogan had moved outside the framework of UN decisions, arguing that the only viable option for Cyprus is a two-state model.
