Vladimir Putin agreed to promote to the UN the idea of a global ban on insulting the religious sentiments of the faithful.
This view was expressed by the Russian President during a meeting he had with representatives of various religions on the occasion of the celebration of the day of “national unity” of Russia, yesterday.
One of the participants in the meeting, the head of the North-Caucasian Muslims’ Coordinating Centre, Ismail Berdiyev, suggested to the Russian President that he submit to the UN Security Council a law that would prohibit the offending of the religious sentiments of the faithful.
“Good suggestion. I do not understand who can disagree with the prohibition of insulting the religious sentiments of the faithful in any form. I have to think about it, I will definitely assign it to the Foreign Ministry,” Putin said, adding: “We have to think about it (how it can be done). As you understand, our initiatives do not always appeal to international platforms (institutions). But some do provoke quite a positive reaction.”
