Speaking on a television network, Metropolitan Nektarios of Argolida confirmed that he is “in line with the State’s decision to cease all divine services,” argued that “sometimes the Church thinks conservatively,” called for “extreme voices of heroism to be isolated,” described “overcrowding as dangerous for human health during this period” and stressed that “the word crisis in Chinese means opportunity.”
“I find myself agreeing, despite it is something that hurts us. It is unprecedented, but regarding human health I think that the State did the right thing,” he said.
He also added that “it is true that the Church is always sceptic; may I dare to say even conservative in some cases, if this is the right word. Maybe we had not realized the magnitude of the problem. The decision of the State is not an action against the State. They did what they did out of necessity. I firmly believe this.”
Finally, he noted that “I really liked the statement of the Ecumenical Patriarch. I think most of us have understood it. We have informed the world. I stressed to them that people should not attend church. Overcrowding is very dangerous to human health. The extreme voices of heroism must be isolated.”
