by Bishop Gregory of Mesaoria
Today the Holy Orthodox Church is celebrating the Eve of the Transfiguration of our Savior Jesus Christ, and commemorates the Hieromartyr Favius (Favian) Bishop of Rome, Saint Nonna, mother of St. Gregory the Theologian, and Saint Eugene the Aitolos (†1682).
Saint Nonna was a pious woman with an excellent character, like Saint Emmelia, mother of the Great Basil, and Saint Anthousa, mother of John Chrysostom.
St. Nonna was literally a par excellence wife and mother. Her husband, Gregory Bishop of Nazianzen, had fallen into the heresy of the Supremists (Hypsistarii), who accepted only One God, but are distinguished in not considering him as Father. With her prayers and patience, St. Nonna not only brought her husband back to the Church’s path, but he was distinguished as one of the most brilliant Bishops of the Christian Faith.
Her children, Gregory, Caesarius and Gorgonia, became authentic jewels of the Church.
St. Nona died peacefully at prayer in the temple, on August 5, 374 AD.
